About

My name is Rain Saulnier and I am a wildlife photographer and bird-watcher. I grew up in a rural area just north of Kingston Ontario Canada where I was fortunate to have tons of exposure to birds, wildlife and nature. One of my favourite memories of wildlife at a young age was hearing Eastern Whip-poor-wills singing from my bedroom window each May/June when I was about 8 years old.

I have always been interested in photography, but it wasn't until I moved from Kingston Ontario to Calgary Alberta in 2018 that I began to truly appreciate birds. Since this time, my work has been recognized by several birding and photography organizations, including both National Geographic and Canadian Geographic. I would consider my spark bird to be a Black-billed Magpie that would occasionally land on my balcony railing during the first few weeks of living in Alberta.

From a photography perspective, I have a passion for creating images of birds that highlight detail, behaviour and the environment. From a bird-watching perspective, I am fascinated by the subtleties of bird behaviour, their migration patterns, and the diverse habitats in which they choose to live. Additionally, I take great pleasure in sharing the skills and knowledge I have gained from thousands of hours spent on photography and bird-watching with others.

Outside of wildlife photography, I am a water management consultant. I graduated from Queen's University with a Bachelors (2016) and Masters (2018) degree in Civil Engineering. Other hobbies include hiking, songwriting, recreational sports and travel.
